Rotarians Commit to Helping the Hungry Volunteers build beds and plant produce to help locals in need The North Hunterdon Rotary Club (NHRC) has partnered with the Clinton Sunrise Rotary Club, America’s Grow-A-Row, local Boy Scout & Girl Scout troops, the Hunterdon Food Pantries in Clinton and Flemington, Members of the Church of the Nazarene, Lowes of Flemington, Fox Lumber of Clinton and Mike Van Doren (of Van Doren Oil) to create a 'Helping the Hungry of Hunterdon County’ Garden (a series of raised garden beds for growing produce, spanning an area roughly 80 feet by 20 feet). 100% of the produce from this 'Helping the Hungry of Hunterdon County’ garden is donated to help the hungry of Hunterdon Country, via the local Food Pantries, Hunterdon Hispanos (Flemington) and others, to ensure at least some of needy families of Hunterdon County can put fresh vegetables on their tables. To help fill the need, the NHRC and also the Clinton Sunrise Rotary Club volunteer with America’s Grow-A-Row picking produce that is then quickly delivered to local soup kitchens, food pantries, etc.. The 'Helping the Hungry of Hunterdon County’ Garden beds are either 12 inches high, or built 3 feet high, to accommodate both volunteers and also to be accessible to some those with physical limitations/disabilities. The Garden is designed using ‘green’ and ‘square foot gardening’ principles, including an automatic, minimal, watering system and also planting/mulching designed to minimize weeding. Rotarians are interested in having proposals from the aforementioned Youth Groups, for a Solar Energy pump design and also a water collection process, which might coincide with science fair or other such student activities. The Boy and Girl Scouts have already used this opportunity toward their annual Community Service requirement. They hope to involve the County Rotary Interact and/or Rotoact Clubs soon. If you are interested in getting involved with this fabulous project, please contact The Rotary Club of North Hunterdon. |
